Eero Saarinen was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, known for his ability to combine sculptural form with functionality in both furniture and architecture. Although his work was part of the modernist movement, Saarinen had a unique talent for breaking away from the rigid rules of modernism by introducing organic, fluid forms.

The side tables from the "Pedestal" series, models '163' and '161', designed in 1957, exemplify his innovative approach. Saarinen created these tables as part of a broader "Pedestal" furniture collection, which also included the famous "Tulip Chairs." His goal was to solve what he called the "ugly mess of legs" that dominated furniture design at the time. This led him to design tables and chairs with a single, central base, giving them a sleek and modern appearance while also allowing for more space around them.

The '163' and '161' models feature marble tops in "Calacatta" and "Grigio Carnico," adding a touch of luxury. Marble, being both durable and beautiful, offers natural patterns that contrast with the smoothness of the lacquered metal base. The round and oval shapes of the tops further emphasize Saarinen's organic design philosophy.

Like most of Saarinen's work, these tables have become design icons, valued for both their aesthetics and functionality. Their timeless appearance ensures they fit seamlessly into various interior styles, from classic modernism to contemporary settings. The signs of use and minor damage on the described tables reflect their history and longevity, adding to their value as collectible items.
